Description
This is a row of six houses located on Park Road in Tring. They were likely built in the late 19th century, possibly by William Huckvale, and were originally intended for staff of the Rothschild family. The houses are constructed of red brick, with the end houses being stucco-faced. They have steep slate roofs, although the roof of number 3 has been replaced with concrete tiles.
The houses are arranged in three pairs, stepping up the slope and facing south towards the countryside. Each house features a prominent Dutch gable with a triangular pediment above, containing a single window. The first floor has two windows, and the ground floor has a large, canted wooden bay window. Recessed half-glazed doors are set within stuccoed reveals, each with a triangular, pedimented hood supported on shaped brackets. The windows are recessed box sashes with 3/3 glazing bars and segmental heads within segmental arches, and there are transomed small-pane bays.
A tall red brick front wall rises to piers with moulded caps and terracotta ball finials. The houses are visually prominent when viewed from the motorway to the south. The group is recognised for its group value.
