Description
This icehouse, built in the 18th century for the Ashridge Estate, is located in Great Frithsden Copse, 110 meters southwest of Brick Wall Cottage. The structure is made of red brick, featuring many vitrified bricks. It is circular and set into the slope of the land, accessed by a short, low, segmental vaulted brick tunnel that is about 5 feet wide. The tunnel ends with a segmental arched entrance, which has tile springers and an iron gate. The icehouse has a diameter of approximately 15 feet and includes a deep conical well topped by a brick hemispherical dome, with the entrance at the level of the springing. The interior showcases English-bond brickwork, and numerous initials and dates are carved into the tunnel walls, including 'IPG 1778' on the north side. The entrance was rebuilt in the 20th century.
