Description

Two houses, now a shop, were built in the early 19th century. They are constructed of brick, covered with stucco, and have a hipped tile roof. The houses are two storeys high, arranged with a double-pile plan, and have chimneys on the central dividing wall, as well as cellars beneath the rear portions. In the original arrangement of No. 59, the staircase rose from the rear corner room; this staircase was removed in No. 61. The west-facing front is symmetrical, featuring a low parapet with coping, two windows to each floor—sash windows are positioned above one house to each storey—and doors to the left and right. An attractive 19th-century swept arcaded hipped canopy extends along the ground floor front. The doors are six-panelled, and small, shuttered shop windows are located beneath the canopy. The canopy is supported by six quatrefoil-section cast iron posts with shallow curved braces.
