Description

The Tile Mosaic Map, also known as the Emett Mosaic, is a mural created by Rowland Emett and painted by Phyllis Butler of Carter Tiles Ltd, installed in 1960 on the south side of the Marlowes tiered car park in Hemel Hempstead.

This mosaic is made from small grey, red, and blue tesserae, with surrounding panels of painted white tiles. The rectangular mural measures approximately 5 meters in height and 12 meters in width, featuring a semi-abstract pictorial map of Hemel Hempstead and its nearby towns and villages, including Ayot St Lawrence, St Albans, Hatfield, Bovingdon, Berkhamsted, Whipsnade, and Dunstable, arranged clockwise from the top right. Each town name is accompanied by a hand-painted caricature on irregularly shaped white-tiled panels, connected by roads and rivers depicted in red and blue tesserae, all set against a grey tesserae background.

Below the Hemel Hempstead panel, there is an image of a railway locomotive and carriages traveling southeast to Euston. The four corners of the mural feature panels representing historic modes of transport: a train, space rocket, car, and horse-drawn carriage, arranged clockwise from the top right. The artist's surname, ‘EMETT’, is displayed in mosaic in the bottom left corner. The mural is prominently located at the west end of the south elevation of the Marlowes tiered car park, at the intersection of Marlowes and Hillfield Road.
