Description
Old Marlowes House is a building dating from around 1650, which was remodeled in the 18th century. It served as the dower house of The Bury until 1678, after which it was sold by the Combes family. The house features a stucco front and a low-pitched roof, and it has two storeys with four sash windows that include glazing bars. The entrance boasts a fine doorway with an eight-fielded panelled door, an architrave surround, and an open broken pediment supported by consoles. The tympanum above the door contains an armorial roundel surrounded by a wreath. Inside, the house retains a remarkable mid-17th century staircase with Corinthian newel posts, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The hall is ovolo panelled and features a panelled round arch on Doric pilasters. There is also a finely carved chimneypiece in the ground floor room. Old Marlowes House is part of a group that includes Nos 45, 53 to 59 (odd) and Nos 63 to 67 (odd).
