Description
The war memorial at St Michael and All Angels Church in Berkhamsted is a First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War. It was erected around 1920, with the names of those who fell in the Second World War added after 1945.
The memorial is carved from stone and is located in the churchyard, south of the chancel of the Grade II-listed church. It features a budded cross on a capital at the top of a tapering shaft, which rises from a moulded square plinth on a three-tier stepped base. The plinth bears a weathered inscription that reads: "1914-1919/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY."
Additionally, there is an inscription commemorating the fallen of the Second World War, which states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS. John 15:13/ 1938 - 1945."
