Description

The South Barn at Barnes Farm is a timber-frame barn, with its eastern section dating to the 17th century and a near-contemporary western addition. The barn is dark weatherboarded and has steep red tile roofs, which have been renewed on the eastern section. It comprises a tall, three-bay section adjoining a wider, five-bay section, with the north sides aligned. A gabled porch projects from the south side of the western part, with a double door opposite on the north side.

The eastern three-bay section features jowled posts, mid-height rails, straight braces to the tie-beams, an inclined queen-strut clasped-purlin roof, wind-braces in the middle bay, and a squint-butted scarf joint in the wallplate. The taller western five-bay section has stepped jowls to posts, mid-height rails, straight braces to the tie-beam, collar trusses with struts across the lower angles, clasped upper purlins, staggered butt-jointed lower purlins with straight wind braces, straight tension braces in the walls, and a squint-butted scarf joint in the wallplate. The western section was built to connect with the older eastern section. A modern entrance has been added to the west end. The farmhouse at Barnes Farm is not listed.
