Description
This tomb chest, located in Flamstead Churchyard 40 meters northeast of the chancel, was built in 1811 for Thomas Pickford Esq, a notable figure from Markyate and founder of a well-known carrier firm. Made of Portland stone, the tomb features tall, fluted corner pilasters and panels with rebated corners. It has a high moulded base resting on stone slabs that include sockets for railings. The top slab is hipped and weathered, with a half-round rim and acroteria. An inscription on the south side reads: "In a Vault beneath this Tomb are deposited the mortal Remains of Thos. PICKFORD Esq of Markgate Street in this parish who departed this life on the 21st Day of Septr 1811 in the 65 Year of his Age."
