Description
The Parish Church of St Augustine is a Grade I listed building located in Hoddesdon, dating from the 15th to 16th century, with restoration work carried out by J Clarke in 1856-1857. The church is constructed of flint with stone quoins and dressings, topped with an old tiled roof featuring embattlements. It has a three-stage west tower that includes a square-headed door and a four-light window, supported by angle buttresses and a polygonal stair turret. The restored church features two-light aisle windows and a south porch dating from around 1650, which has a classical arched opening. An octagonal turret is located on the northeast side.
The northeast chancel chapel, built in 1522, is made of ashlar and features an inscribed flat parapet along with four-centre and square-headed windows that exhibit good detailing. The nave and aisles are designed without a chancel arch and consist of six bays with clustered shafts. The nave roof is a crown post design, and the choir is panelled. There are late 15th and early 16th century tomb chests located on the north and south sides of the choir, as well as an early 17th century wall monument on the east wall of the south aisle. Additionally, there is a 12th century octagonal font supported by round columns, featuring shallow blank arcading. A modern extension has been added to the south of the church.
