Description

Harold House is a Grade II* listed building located at 73 Cheshunt High Street in Waltham Cross. It dates back to 1757 and features a brown brick exterior with painted stone dressings and a mansard roof covered in old tiles. The building has a basement, two storeys, and attics, with a slight central projection that has a pediment. The façade includes a symmetrical arrangement of sash windows in moulded frames, with one window in the centre and three on either side, all featuring gauged brick lintels. The basement has casement windows, and there is a continuous sill on the first floor, along with a moulded cornice and a parapet with balustrades in front of the box dormers. A circular lunette is set in the pediment, topped by a cartouche that carries a date plaque.

Access to the building is via steps and a bridge leading to a four-fielded, two-flush panelled door set in a reveal, accompanied by a rectangular fanlight. The door is framed by a Roman Ionic surround with three-quarter columns, a pulvinated frieze, a modillioned cornice, and a pediment. The rear elevation features 6/6-pane sash windows, most of which retain their original glazing bars.

Inside, much of the original detail remains, including a modillioned and pilastered entrance corridor that opens to a dog-leg staircase. This staircase is adorned with pairs of moulded balusters on each step and scrolls on the sides of the risers. The north and south front rooms are fitted with rococo-carved wooden fireplace surrounds and overmantels. The bridge leading to the front door has wrought iron side railings with a chinoiserie pattern. The front gate is scrolled with side panels and an overthrow, and there are three steps with a curved handrail and attached footscrapes. The front spiked side railings were added in 1982.
