Description

Barrington Hall is a mansion, later adapted for use as offices, dating from around 1734 with significant alterations in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and rusticated stone quoins. Its design breaks down the structure into smaller, two and three-storey units, along with a basement at the west end. All units have balustraded parapets and modillioned cornices. The west front features a ground storey of smooth rusticated masonry, with an elaborate parapet displaying arched, pillared corners and octagonal turrets. There are also ornamental shaped gables, reminiscent of Dutch architectural styles. The south front's central block features a decorative centrepiece with carved figures. Windows vary in size and proportion, and are casements with stone transoms, mullions, and architraves. The central block of the south front incorporates a semi-circular arched doorway with an oriel bay window situated above it. The east wing is plain on its north side and features five semi-circular windows with a fan glazing pattern. Within the interior of this service wing are 18th-century brick cross-vaulted cellars, supported by square piers. The main block retains significant fabric from the original 18th-century design, including surviving door surrounds and rococo plasterwork. A fine carved chimney piece, documented by Mullman in 1771, is located in the saloon.
