Description

This is a late 16th-century house, originally a farmhouse. It has a basic ‘T’ shaped plan, with a crosswing at the southwest end. The crosswing has a hipped roof at the front and a gable at the rear, while the main range has a higher ridge line and a gable. The northeast gable triangle has black weatherboard cladding, with a smaller area of similar cladding on the upper part of the southwest gable. The building is two storeys high, with single-story lean-tos with pantile roofs against the northeast gable and to the rear. A 20th-century angle porch with a hipped pegtile roof and imitation timber framing stands at the front. The windows are 20th-century metal casements with square leaded lights. Red brick stacks protrude from the ridge line, one near the front of the crosswing and another near the northeast gable. Inside, the timber framing is exposed, revealing an 'in-line' hall and a parlour/solar. This framing includes bracing proud of the studs, similar to that found in an adjacent barn. Other features include jowled posts, a side purlin roof with arch braces, halved and bladed scarf joints, and a probable former open hall. A stack at the east end of the hall incorporates a bread oven with a cast iron door.
