Description
The boundary wall to Walden Castle, located along Church Street and Castle Hill in Saffron Walden, dates from the early 19th century. It stands approximately 2 meters high and is constructed of flint, panelled between red brick piers that are mostly flush. The section along Castle Hill is about 51 meters long and is entirely made of red brick in a mixed bond, primarily using headers, with some fragments of moulded round bricks scattered throughout. The wall features a half-round red brick coping along its entire length.
At the southeast corner, where an old gateway once stood, there is rudimentary flint infilling. An adjacent curved section has been rebuilt in red brick and faced with flint towards the street. There are two original gateways at either end, each marked by square brick piers topped with stone caps. The section along Church Street measures 74 meters in length and includes a gateway inset with linking low quadrant walls. The original spear-topped railings on the quadrants are complemented by 20th-century gate-leaves that hang on inner wooden posts, designed in a similar style. The wall to the east has been internally buttressed with four heavy quadrant piers from the 20th century.
