Description

The two houses at 35 and 37 Church Street date from the early 19th century, with alterations in the 20th century and several rear additions. They are constructed of gault brick and stucco, with slate roofs. The houses have a rectangular street frontage, with rear courts largely infilled. They are three stories high, with cellars.

The north front is a long, four-bay block with plain giant pilasters, breaking forward from what was originally a single-bay range at the west end, with hipped roofs. The façade is divided with a property break three-quarters of the way from the east end, marked by double-width pilasters; these are stuccoed to the west (No. 35) and gault brick to the east (No. 37). The ground floor has two shallow, three-cant bay windows between a doorway. The windows have reinforced steel joist lintels and concrete sills, and contain 2x4, 3x4, and 2x4 panes of glass. Cellar grilles are below the windows. The doorway has a round-headed overlight, a 20th-century four-panelled door. Above the doorway is an early 19th-century sash window with glazing bars, with five panes across and three down, plus upper radiating bars. Further windows to the east have glazing bars, with three panes across and four down. An arched entry provides access to a passageway leading to the rear of No. 33. The first floor has six sash windows each containing three panes across and four down. The second floor has five similar windows evenly spaced. The rear south elevation exhibits a gable for No. 35 and red brick with multiple additions for No. 37.

The interior of No. 37 has been subdivided for office use and is largely 20th-century. The cellar is of flint cobble and brick with a rear fireplace.
