Description

Two houses at 34 and 36 Church Street date to the early 19th century, with later 20th-century alterations. The houses are timber-framed and rendered, with brick and a slate roof, and a red brick stack. They have a rectangular street frontage and a rear out-shut extending the full length. The houses are two storeys high and include cellars.

The front elevation, facing south, has rendered surfaces with remnants of old ashlar lining, which has been considerably repaired. It features a mirrored pair of single-window ranges with doorways positioned at the outer edges. There are four windows in total. All details are from the early 19th century; the windows have shallow cornice hoods with recessed decoration and moulded architraves, horned sashes, and cellar grilles. The doorways have flat cornice heads supported by brackets, reeded jambs, and a plain frieze. The doors are made of six flush bead-moulded panels. The stack is located on the ridge, slightly off-centre to the east.

The rear, north-facing elevation has a two-storey lean-to with irregular window placement. The ground floor features two 20th-century doors, one (at No.36) largely glazed with a pattern of 3x5 panes, and the other a simpler design with an upper glazed light. A 19th-century casement window is also present. On the first floor are a 19th-century two-light casement and a 19th-century metal casement with a 3x3 pane arrangement, along with a single 20th-century window.

The east-facing elevation is relatively plain, constructed of brick except for the upper part of the house, and features simple 19th-century bargeboards. The interiors are plain.
