Description

The garden wall of Walden Place is a structure that dates from the mid-16th century, with elements from the 17th century and around 1800. It is constructed of red brick and flint cobble and runs from No. 21 Freshwell Street south for 155 meters and then 85 meters east into Park Lane. This wall forms the southern and western boundaries of the garden of Walden Place.

At the northern end, the wall is approximately 4 meters high and gradually steps down to about 2 meters in Park Lane. The northern section is entirely made of brick and features a dentilled triangular coping. There is a small mid-19th century doorway made of moulded brick with a flat arched head and a moulded rectangular surround, complete with an upper hood moulding. The main opening has a large casement with rolls.

To the south, the wall has a lower plinth made of flint with tile and brick offsets, along with two shaped down steps and a blocked plain doorway. In Freshwell Street, there are sections of 17th and 18th century brickwork, including three low brick arches near New Road. The southern end of the wall continues into Park Street with brickwork from around 1800, featuring lower flint panels and pilaster buttresses. The continuity of the wall is interrupted by a 20th century house entry and doorway, and the eastern end merges with lean-to sheds.
