Description
The boundary wall and gateway located southwest of Wells Hall date back to the 16th century, with repairs made in the 19th century. Constructed from English bond red brick, the wall stretches approximately 70 yards long and stands about 6 feet high. It features a plinth moulding and roll-moulded saddle-back terracotta coping, with some sections of the coping having been renewed.
At the right end of the wall, there is a small buttress with set-offs, while the left end has four larger 19th-century buttresses, also with set-offs. The gateway is positioned off-center and has a double-chamfered round arch, with the arch of the corner order being ovolo moulded. Above the arch, there are battlements adorned with three diagonally-set pinnacles, the center of which is taller than the others. Flanking the gateway are buttresses with set-offs and a 20th-century wrought-iron gate.
The southeast end of the wall has been rebuilt, and a later outbuilding has been constructed against the wall at this end.
