Description
Barnston Farmhouse is a lobby-entrance farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with a single-storey rear extension added in the 18th century. The building is timber framed, with tile-hung upper walls and plastered lower walls, topped by a tiled roof. It has four bays, including a chimney bay with the lobby entrance and stair. The farmhouse is two storeys high and features a three-window range of 19th-century double-hung sashes and a 19th-century porch. The roof is half-hipped at both ends. Inside, there are stop-chamfered beams and a clasped purlin roof. The newel stair in the entrance lobby, which rises to the first floor and attics, appears to be original to the building, making it a fairly rare survival. There is also one incomplete 17th-century wrought iron casement window located in the rear of the middle ground floor room. The farmhouse is situated on a moated site.
