Description

This is an early 14th-century hall house, significantly altered in the late 15th or early 16th century with a new range built along the street front, and further modified in the 18th century. Constructed of timber framing and plaster, it has a red plain tile hipped roof. The house is two storeys high with attics and cellars, and has a five-window front. It features 18th-century double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, three 18th-century ground floor bay windows with a wood dentilled cornice, a 18th-century doorcase enclosing an original six-panel door, and a parapet front with a wood modillioned cornice and a long wall jetty. The original 14th-century hall is located at the rear, running parallel to the street and retaining its original crown post roof. This roof features crown posts with octagonal shafts, moulded bases and capitals, and four arch braces. The front range originally had three gables facing the street and may have included ground-floor shops. There are also late 15th or early 16th-century cellars. The house contains good 18th-century and later interior detailing. The site was historically part of the Manor of Thaxted, and the early hall is part of that complex.
