Description
The Guildhall in Thaxted was built between 1390 and 1410 for the Guild of Cutlers. It has undergone alterations and restorations in the early 18th century, around 1910, and in 1978. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with the frame exposed on the outside. It has a double range hipped roof covered with red plain tiles and consists of three storeys plus cellars. The ground floor serves as an open flagged market house, featuring an open timber ceiling with heavy cross beams supported by a large central post. The original cellar remains intact. The two upper storeys are jettied on three sides, showcasing moulded bressumers and curved brackets. The first floor includes arcading with two-centred arches. The roof is a simple design with two-armed crown posts, originally gabled towards Town Street. The north corner of the building incorporates a parish cage.
