Description

Martells Manor is a house dating from the 15th century, originally a hall house with crosswings. It was altered in the 16th and 19th centuries. The house is timber framed and plastered, with a red plain tile roof. It has two storeys and gabled crosswings to the left and right. The right-hand crosswing was formerly jettied but is now underbuilt. The front has a four-window range on the first floor, featuring 19th-century vertical sliding sash windows with side lights, and 15th and 16th-century mullioned windows. A pediment doorcase is supported by brackets. There is 17th and 20th-century pargetting on the exterior. A 16th-century red brick chimney stack is located on the right-hand wing; the central 16th-century chimney has been extensively rebuilt. The left-hand wing has been extended to the rear and is clad in 19th-century painted brick. This wing includes 20th-century casement windows and one 19th-century vertical sliding sash with sidelights in a segmental head. There are two gabled dormers. Two small 20th-century rear extensions are present, with red plain tile roofs. The timber frame remains visible inside, including a 16th-century fireplace with a mantel beam.
