Description
Turnberry Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, which has been extended and altered in the 16th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. The original structure consisted of four bays. A chimney stack was inserted at the north end of the third bay in the 16th century. The house was extended by two bays to the north, with a second axial chimney stack at the junction, also in the late 16th century. In the 20th century, an external chimney and a gabled porch were added to the north gable end. The cottage is single-storey with attics, featuring a central door, six 20th-century casement windows, and three gabled and tiled dormers with 20th-century casement windows. The south end has a half-hipped roof. Originally, the house was built as a single storey with an arch-braced side-purlin roof. A floor was added in all four bays in the mid-16th century, along with an axial chimney stack in the late 16th century. The bays added to the north were initially single storey, with a floor inserted in the 17th century. The 1952 List records an inscription indicating the work of Henry and Mary Judd, who acquired H M Stomps and four acres in 1709. The name 1710 Stomps is now used for another cottage further south on the same side of the road.
