Description
Bacons Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is primarily timber framed and encased in brickwork, with some structural brickwork, and has a tiled roof. It originally consisted of four bays arranged approximately north-south, with the main aspect facing west. There is a 16th-century external chimney stack on the rear wall at the second bay from the north, and an inserted chimney stack at the partition between the two southern bays, though the date of this addition is unknown. The halls were raised in the 17th century.
In the late 19th century, the entire building was encased in red brickwork in Flemish bond and re-fenestrated. A later addition to the north was made in structural brickwork that is lighter in color and set back slightly from the existing elevation. The roof tiles were re-set to ensure a cohesive appearance.
On the west elevation, the ground floor features three late 19th-century or 19th-century style sash windows under shallow segmental arches, including one large tripartite window. There is a glazed main door in a latticework porch and a glazed subsidiary door in the southern bay. The first floor has six late 19th-century or 19th-century style sash windows.
The interior is fully plastered, except for the southern bay, which was partially stripped during an examination in December 1982, revealing heavy close studding and traces of mutilated 17th-century wall paintings. Limited evidence suggests that the farmhouse was originally a late medieval hall house of high status, featuring a parlour or solar bay to the north, a two-bay hall with a side chimney stack, and a southern service end, or it may represent a 16th-century derivation of this plan.
