Description
24 and 24A High Street are early 19th-century offices located in Saffron Walden. The building features cream Flemish bond gault brickwork and a gabled slate roof, with two gault brick stacks that have four linked octagonal shafts and one stack with six shafts. It stands three storeys tall.
The front elevation includes a recessed band of render off centre, a stucco string band, and a band at the impost level of the ground floor. The second floor has four 16-pane double-hung sash windows. The ground floor features an opening to the rear yard with a flat-topped arch, three 16-pane double-hung sash windows with semicircular arches in recessed panels, and outer semicircular rendered arches. There is a semicircular-headed entrance with a door that has six moulded panels. All arches have radial pattern top lights. The building also has a plinth and a basement light with a stone lintel.
The rear elevation has a deeper plan and includes a quadrant curved wall made of red header bond brickwork. Inside No. 24, there is an early 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters, a curving handrail, and an upper section featuring a column newel post.
