Description

This is a house and shop, originally dating back to the 16th century, with significant alterations and extensions around 1840. The construction combines timber framing, now plastered and with gault brick facing, slate, and peg and pan tiled roofs. The building is rectangular in plan, extending over three storeys and including cellars.

The front, south-facing elevation is brick-built and features deep eaves with a moulded soffit board. It has a two-window range, with 19th-century double-fronted wooden shop windows in projecting bays, each now fitted with three-light mullion bars. Segment-headed cellar vents are located below the windows. The front door is from the 19th century, with glazed upper panels and bead-moulded boarding. The first and second floor windows are horned sash windows with a 3x2 pane configuration.

The rear, north-facing elevation has a deep, peg-tiled catslide roof over the street range and a 19th-century out-shut with a short, flat-roofed extension. The out-shut is constructed of brick and flint cobble, with the western end raised and featuring a pantiled roof of a lower pitch, brick walling, and rough cast. A C20 plain door with upper glazing (2x3 panes) is present, alongside a double casement window with glazing bars (4x3 panes) and two smaller metal casement windows (2x2 panes). The east-facing elevation is a C20 blank red brick wall.

Inside, the ground and first floors retain some exposed timber framing, including jowled posts and a wall plate between the first and second floor windows. The shop ceiling displays boxed bridging and binding joists for two bays, with a jettied rear section supported by an exposed central jetty bracket. A doorway frame is visible on the first floor through the east end.
