Description

No. 38 High Street is a building that dates from the 18th century and early 19th century, originally serving as shops. It features a timber-framed structure with a Flemish-bond gault brick front facing High Street. The building consists of two linked blocks: the northern block is three storeys high with attics and has a long gambrel roof covered in peg tiles, positioned at right angles to the street. The southern block is a lower two-storey building with a flat roof.

The northern part of the building has a plain parapet with a stucco string and a recessed strip panel. The attic storey includes two square, six-paned double-hung sash windows with stucco flat-arched heads. On the first floor, there are two twelve-paned double-hung sash windows with similar heads. The ground floor features a mid-19th century shop front that includes a fascia, consoles, a cornice, and large panes of glass with a central recessed entrance.

The southern block has a rebuilt brick front with a two-light, 19th-century small-paned casement window on the first floor. The ground floor also has a mid-19th century shopfront that curves around to a side passage, complete with a moulded cornice fascia and large glass panes divided by colonnette mullions with capitals. The shopfront projects at the flank and corner, featuring curved glass.

The long gambrel roof has half hips at both ends, three rebuilt dormers, and one 19th-century flat-roofed dormer with a two-light casement that has a central horizontal glazing bar. There is a large stack that runs through the ridge line of the gambrel roof. The rendered flank of the lower block has a mixture of 20th-century windows on the first floor.
