Description
No. 42 High Street, which also includes No. 1 George Street, is a late 18th-century building featuring shops with flats above. The structure is built of red Flemish bond brickwork, accented with gault brick dressings, and has an 'L' plan. The roof is covered in plain tiles, hipped to the north and gabled to the rear, with a stack. There are two additional red brick rectangular stacks. The building stands three storeys tall, topped with a plain parapet that has stone coping and a painted timber cornice.
Both the High Street and George Street elevations are similar, featuring three 12-paned double-hung sash windows on the second floor that are recessed into the wall. Most of the sash windows have thick glazing bars. On the first floors of each public elevation, there are three taller 12-paned double-hung sash windows with rendered stepped keystone heads. The High Street elevation displays an old fire insurance plaque, while the George Street side has an old metal street name. Each ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront, with the High Street side also featuring an entrance door leading to the flat above.
