Description
18 and 20 King Street is a house with ground floor shops, dating from the 18th century, with possible earlier origins and 20th-century additions. The building features a timber-framed and plastered structure with red brick and a clay tiled roof. It has a U-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall.
The front south elevation has a four-window range, with two flush bays alternating with two canted bays on the first and second floors. The ground floor contains two shops, all of which are now modern 20th-century work with plate glass windows and doors. The first and second floor windows are sashes with glazing bars on the upper sashes, while the lower sashes are plain. The first-floor flush windows have wooden pediments over a frieze, and the upper sashes consist of three panes by two panes. The second-floor windows are similar but feature a cornice and a pulvinated frieze. The bay windows on the first and second floors have central arched glazing with radial glazing bars, side cants, and upper sashes with two panes by two panes, with tile-hung bay cants between the windows.
A central ridge stack is present. The rear north elevation is rendered in 20th-century style. The street range includes four second-floor 20th-century two-light casement windows. There is a plain flat-roofed 20th-century brick extension at the east and west ends, connected by a central link, with plain casement windows above. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments states that the building is said to be dated 1633.
