Description
No. 4 King Street is a mid-19th century shop on the ground floor with a library annexe on the first floor, which is part of No. 2. The building has a rectangular plan and is two storeys high, with a stucco roof that is obscured by a parapet. The south front elevation features a first-floor triple arcade consisting of three closely set circular-headed French windows, which are flanked by Corinthian pilasters and have paterae in the spandrels. The archivolts are enriched with fluted leaf designs. A dentilled cornice and parapet are articulated to the bay system below, complemented by rusticated panels. The overall composition is framed at each side by banded rustication. At the eastern end, there is a substantial stack that is rendered and ashlar lined. Each French window has four lights per leaf and is accompanied by a shallow balcony with ornamental cast-iron railings. Inside, the first floor features a plaster ceiling adorned with an anthemion-decorated border, and there is a fireplace that is now blocked.
