Description

Lime Tree Court is a large house, dating to around 1800, now used as commercial premises. It has undergone 20th-century additions and internal alterations. The house is constructed primarily of gault brick, with a slate roof and some timber framing which has been plastered over. The plan is rectangular, with a large 20th-century conservatory attached to the northeast corner.

The three-story building includes a basement. The south front elevation is in an Adamesque style, featuring five bays, two stacks, and an articulated front with a central pediment. The outer bays vary in width, and the building has deep eaves. The main floor (Piano Nobile) has a large Venetian window with a stucco shell tympanum, detached shafts, and sash windows with glazing bars in a pattern of 1x4, 4x4, and 1x4 panes, plus radial panes. The window details extend down to the basement, featuring sashes with 1x2, 4x4, and 1x2 panes. Flanking the Venetian window are depressed arched-headed sash windows with a 2x3 pane layout, plus a radial pane, all within rusticated surrounds. To the east and west are doorways approached by flights of steps; the eastern doorway has a gabled porch supported by reeded columns with capitals of Egyptian profile, leading to a 6-panel door, recessed and reed moulded. The western doorway is simpler, with a French window consisting of two rows of five panes, with a restored 19th-century pediment and reeded columns. A similar casement window is found to the west, with a basement sash window below it, featuring a 4x2 pane layout.

The first floor features shallow stone balustrades with rosette paterae and a decorated stucco string course. A central tripartite sash window (with a slightly segmental head) has glazing bars in a pattern of 1x4, 3x4, and 1x4 panes. Flanking this are sash windows with 2x4 panes. The west bay has a segment-headed sash window with a 3x4 pane layout. The second floor has a lower brick string course and sash windows with glazing bars, with four windows having a 2x3 pane layout and one (on the west) with a 3x3 pane layout. The central three bays of the first and second floors have an ochre wash with white tuck pointing. The east-facing elevation is mostly blank, with timber framing and plastered areas, with the original brick facing visible. A small ground-floor rear lean-to is present. A large 20th-century conservatory block, with a red brick base wall, is situated to the north.

The interior retains an Adamesque style in the principal rooms. The ground floor has a moulded plastered ceiling with oval and shell motifs, and tripartite niches in the west wall with reeded columns and archivolt paterae. A room to the west features a marble chimney-piece and four doorways with reeded architraves and paterae. First-floor rooms feature acanthus-decorated plaster friezes. The staircase is distinguished by turned newel posts, a shaped handrail, and stick balusters. Visible timber framing and the irregularity of the facade suggest both adaptation and subsequent alteration.
