Description
Cambridge House is a registry office located on High Street in Saffron Walden. It was built in the early 19th century but has earlier origins. The building features painted Flemish bond brickwork and a slate hipped roof. It stands two storeys tall and has multiple rubble-lined cellars. The front façade facing High Street includes five full-height pilaster strips and a moulded frieze. The first floor has four 12-paned double-hung sash windows with stone sills and rendered arches. The ground floor mirrors this design but includes a doorcase with reeded pilasters, a flat moulded hood, and a frieze with a recessed panel. There are two cement steps leading to a six-panel door, with the top two panels being glazed. The building has a tarred plinth with three segmental arched cellar lights, one of which has a grille. At the corner with Church Street, the building has a quadrant curve. The Church Street side features three broad piers and two 12-paned double-hung sash windows above one similar window and a blind recess. The south flank is rendered and includes 20th-century windows and one red brick stack.
Inside, there are remnants of a late 14th-century house, including a service door with an ogee profile and two quatrefoils in the spandrels. The interior also showcases much 17th-century style panelling, while the Marriage Room has simple early 19th-century panelling, dado, and cornice. The rear door, now enclosed, features a moulded architrave with a cornice and an attic with a recessed panel above.
