Description

The Army and Navy Stores (part) is a shop and office located on High Street in Saffron Walden, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. The building features exposed timber framing and a gabled plain tile roof, with two storeys and attics. It has one dormer with a lean-to roof that contains a two-light leaded casement window.

The elevation showcases the exposed frame of the first floor, which includes two original windows with deep oriel sills. Between these are 17th-century windows with moulded mullions, while the original openings have been filled with a two-light and a three-light painted timber casement, also with leaded lights. The jetty is exposed, featuring a moulded bressumer and three brackets.

On the ground floor, the storey posts are reversed, displaying jowls to the exterior. There is a contemporary door with a 4-centred arched head, adorned with leaf-carved spandrels, leading to a 20th-century door. The shopfront consists of three large panes and a brick stallriser, with a band of moulded plasterwork above, remade from casts of older work.

At the rear, the building has a half gable against an adjoining structure and a slate lean-to. This section is part of a longer long-wall jetty house, truncated at its northern end. Inside, the building features chamfered spine beams that were formerly fitted with soffit tenoned joists. There is a hole in the rear framing that indicates the location of a former contemporary rear wall-stack and a mortice that may have been for a garderobe door head. The roof is supported by a crown post, which has one chamfered post with plain stops at its base.
