Description

Farmhouse. The building consists of a front range dating from around 1880 and a rear range from the late 16th or early 17th century. The front range is constructed of plastered brick with hipped slate roofs and a red brick stack. It is arranged in a T-plan with two storeys and a three-window front, featuring a central projecting bay with a six-panelled door set in a plain porch supported by circular columns and a canted canopy. The windows are plate glass sashes. The rear range is timber-framed and rendered, with a gabled old tile roof and a rendered brick ridge stack. It has a two-unit plan with a cross-passage on the right. The range is one storey and attic, with a three-window front. A mid-19th-century four-panelled door, glazed, is set in a moulded wood architrave with a bracketed hood. There is a 20th-century plate-glass window and two small 20th-century lights. A small rear kitchen wing was altered in the mid-20th century. The interior of the late 19th-century front range has no notable features. The late 16th/early 17th-century rear range has an ogee-stopped chamfered spine beam with run-out stops and an early 19th-century fireplace with a fluted surround and paterae in the room on the right, and a plain transverse beam to the former service room on the left. A 18th-century two-panelled door is on the first floor. A rear wing, likely from the mid to late 18th century, contains panelled doors of the same date, a chamfered beam, and a mid-19th-century cast-iron range by A and I Joslin, Colchester, complete with paterae, a mantel shelf, and a stone sink.
