Description

Carlton House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that features a 16th-century range at the rear. The west end of this range was remodeled in the late 17th century to create the current front, with a T-shaped plan extended to the right in the late 18th or early 19th century. The front range is made of colourwashed brick and has a roof covered with glazed black pantiles. The rear wing is timber framed and encased in brick, with a slated roof and a later section that has a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys, with an attic in part of the front range. There are three windows featuring 18th- to 19th-century casements under segmental arches. The entrance is asymmetrical, located in the later addition, and consists of a 19th-century six-panel door (with the upper two panels glazed) and a flat-roofed porch supported by octagonal posts. The central doorway in the earlier section has been bricked up. The gable ends have parapets with integral stacks. On the south side of the rear wing, part of the original crowstepped gable is still visible. Inside, the left room of the front range has a moulded floor beam with very ornate stop-chamfers. The room above features a bolection-moulded fireplace and flanking doors with 17th-century panelling and splat balustrading above. Some exposed framing can be seen in the rear wing at first floor level.
