Description
Hungerdowns Farmhouse is a house with an 18th century front range and a rear range that dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of red brick and features a red plain tiled gambrel roof with an end chimney stack. The building has two storeys and attics, with three gabled dormers and a parapet. The front has a three-window arrangement of tripartite small paned vertically sliding sashes, except for a single light central window on the first floor, all set under segmental arches. The central entrance consists of a four-panel, two-light door with a moulded surround and a flat canopy supported by columns. The rear ranges are one storey with attics, each featuring a gabled dormer facing the road, three ground floor small paned vertically sliding sashes with shutters, and a boarded door. William Cooke, a yeoman, lived here in 1796, as noted in F.H. Erith's "Ardleigh in 1796," published in 1978.
