Description

Lower Farmhouse is a cottage dating from around 1600, with later alterations. It is timber-framed and has a rough render finish. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, and there are end chimney stacks. The cottage is one storey high with attics, featuring three gabled dormers. It has two ground-floor windows with three small panes each, and three further similar windows above. The central door has four panels and two panes of glass, a moulded surround, and a pentice board. A central wing extends to the rear.

The original timber frame appears largely intact, with a central passage. Inside, there are stop-chamfered bridging joists, heavy ceiling beams, and large end chimney stacks which are now infilled. A halved and bladed top plate scarf is visible. Of particular interest are five original doors that remain in place, featuring moulded and nailed construction along with original hinges; those to cupboards beside the first-floor chimney stack have cocks head hinges. Two similar doors are no longer in situ, one featuring large cocks head hinges. The staircase located at the rear of the central passage appears to have been inserted later. The rear wing contains chamfered bridging joists and square section ceiling beams, which may also be later additions.
