Description
The kitchen garden walls and attached bothies, located about 100 meters to the north-east of St Osyth's Priory, date from the mid- to late-18th century.
These walls are constructed of soft red brick laid in Flemish bond and form an irregular rectangular shape, aligned east-west, with a slightly curving south wall and a convex west wall. The exterior features regularly spaced brick piers around the perimeter. The main entrance is centrally located in the north wall, consisting of two brick piers with flat capping and dentils, along with a two-leaf timber door adorned with applied latticework. A secondary pedestrian entrance is found at the south-west corner, and a brick shed is attached to the north-east corner.
Inside, the garden is divided by a central walk and includes a perimeter gravel path bordered by box hedges. The ground is partly laid to grass and partly used for vegetable cultivation. Attached to the south wall is a low brick bothy with a slated pent roof, multiple door and window openings, and a brick chimney.
The listing does not include the Gardener’s Cottage and its associated outbuilding, which are incorporated into the east wall of the garden, nor the bothy attached to the west wall. Additionally, the 20th-century glasshouse on the inside face of the north wall and the bases of early 20th-century glasshouses within the garden are also excluded from the listing.
