Description
The Martello Tower, located off Kirby Road in Walton-on-the-Naze, was built around 1810-1812 and is now used as an entertainment hall. It is constructed of brick, with some areas showing remnants of rendering, and features stone dressings around the windows, door, and coping. There is a stone cill beneath a vertical slit in the coping, which is supported by a corbel. The first-floor doorway has rusticated jambs, a segmental head with a keystone, and a stone chute below the cill level. Access to the building is provided by a 20th-century boarded door, which is reached via a 20th-century external stairway. At door height, there are four windows with rusticated jambs and segmental heads, each featuring keystones, two mullions, and a central transom. The ground floor has 20th-century double doors. This tower is one of the largest among the eleven Clacton Defence Towers.
