Description
The Ship Inn is a public house located in Great Clacton, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The building features an exposed timber frame on the first floor, while the ground floor is roughly rendered with a brick return on the right side. It has a red plain tiled roof that is hipped with a gablet and an outshot to the left, along with a jettied central gable and a lower level range to the right. A red brick chimney stack is positioned to the left of the gable and to the right of the right range. The inn stands two storeys high with attics.
The first floor has a 2:3:1 arrangement of windows, while the ground floor features a 2:1:1 arrangement of 20th-century leaded vari-light casements, including a bow window on the ground floor to the right. There are also 20th-century panelled doors on both the right and left sides. The exposed timber frame on the left includes arched bracing, while the right side has straight bracing; both ranges were jettied at one time. The central forward gable is adorned with arched braces and a moulded bressumer at the first floor jetty, as well as a moulded eaves bressumer.
