Description
The Queen's Head Hotel is a timber-framed building, dating from the 16th or 17th century, with additions and alterations from the 18th century or later. The front elevation is rough rendered with plaster panels to the North Road side. It has red plain tiled roofs, hipped with a gablet to the left range, and a hipped roof to the right (North Road) face. There are two rough rendered stacks on the North Road face and a large stack to the rear left. The left range is two storeys and has attics; it features a flat-headed dormer and a three-window range of vertically sliding sash windows, with a ground floor bay containing a tripartite front window above a tripartite window. A doorway has been blocked on the left side. To the right are two 20th-century panelled doors with top lights and flat canopies on brackets. A large, two-storey, five-light bay window with small pane glazing is on the right side. The right return has a two-window range of three-light casements with transoms. A recessed door is set in a moulded surround with a toplight and fanlight. The hotel was purchased in 1727 by Daniel Prentice, and documentary evidence relating to the building dates back to around 1600.
