Description

Shangri-La is a late 18th-century cottage, possibly extended in the 19th century and with a small 20th-century addition. It is a timber-frame building, weatherboarded and painted white to the front and rear, with a plain tile roof, gabled ends, and cat slides at the rear. There is a large red brick stack at the left end and another on the left side of the outshut. The cottage has a single-room plan with a direct entry from a doorway on the right of the front. It is heated by the stack at the left end and has a winder staircase in the rear, right-hand corner, with integral cupboards on the right side. The rear outshut, with its left-side stack, may be a 19th-century addition.

The front facade has two storeys and a three-window arrangement, with late 19th or 20th-century wooden casement windows. The upper windows are two-light, and those on the ground floor to the left are three-light, all with horizontal glazing. The front door is on the right and is a plank door, now enclosed in a 20th-century brick porch. A plank door is at the centre of the rear, accompanied by a one-light casement to the right and very small casements flanking the left and right. A brick, single-storey outshut was added on the left side around the mid-20th century.

Inside, the principal room at the front features chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and exposed, unchamfered joists. A large fireplace on the left side has a wooden chimney piece with a moulded cornice to the mantel shelf. There are cupboards in the rear left corner with panelled doors and shaped shelves. On the right, integral cupboards have plank doors, one inscribed 'IF 1784'. A similar inscription appears on the left jamb of the chimney piece. The first floor was not inspected.
