Description

This is a house, dating back to the 16th century, with a front range re-faced in brick during the 19th century, and a 16th-century timber-framed rear range. The front of the house is gault brick with red brick detailing, while the other sides are weatherboarded. The roofs are red plain tiles, with a hipped roof to the rear, and there are two red brick chimney stacks. The front elevation has two storeys and a symmetrical four-window arrangement of vertically sliding sash windows with glazing bars. The first-floor windows have gauged brick arches and keystones, with gables above. There's an off-centre left round-headed doorway, with a board door and a top light containing glazing bars.

Inside the front range, you’ll see exposed close-set heavy timber studs, arch braced cambered tie beams, top plates, ceiling beams, and bridging joists. There are 18th-century arches on the landing, vertically boarded and panelled doors (some with original hinges), and a cast iron fire surround in one bedroom. A stair turret includes a later stick baluster staircase.

The taller rear range has retained its original double side purlin roof of four bays, supported by two principal storey posts with moulded jowls at ground floor level. These posts support the rafters, which have bases as wide as the posts and diminish to the apex and are notched and moulded to fit the purlins and collars. There's an arched brace to the wall, a large end chimney stack, and a plank and muntin rear door. The property sits on a moated site and has records of a building existing here as early as around 1210. It is sometimes known as Tryndehays.
