Description
The Women's Institute Hall, formerly known as the Corn Exchange, is a meeting hall built around 1866 by F. Chancellor. It is constructed of striated yellow brick and features a grey slate roof with continuous raised lights at the apex. This tall single-storey building has a gabled front facing the road, with a raised and gabled apex. It is adorned with moulded and dentilled cornices and moulded stone terminals. The raised apex includes side bands and a roundel set within a recessed arch. An ornate wrought iron bracket supports a double-faced memorial clock commemorating Queen Victoria's Jubilee on June 22, 1897.
The façade features three continuous recessed arches with striated round heads, each decorated with central and base flower panels, foliate capitals, and moulded bases for the attached shafts, along with flower-decorated impost roundels surrounding the windows and central doors. The windows are vertically sliding sashes topped with round-headed fanlights. The entrance consists of panelled double doors with an ornate wrought iron round-headed grille above.
