Description
Stansgate Abbey Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 18th century, although it has earlier origins and has undergone later 20th-century extensions and alterations. The central range is timber framed and plastered, while the front range is made of rough rendered brick. The building features gabled wings at the rear and has red plain tiled roofs, with the 18th-century range having a gambrel shape. It is two storeys high with an attic and a two-storey front range. The first floor has eight square leaded two-light casement windows, with French windows on both the left and right sides. There is a central gabled porch that contains a four-panel, two-light door with sidelights. Inside, parts of the 18th-century frame are exposed, showcasing chamfered bridging joists and pegged side girt. The farmhouse is located on a moated site that was once home to a 12th-century Cluniac Abbey, of which only one rebuilt wall remains visible above ground. The majority of the 16th-century house previously on the site has been demolished, although some fragments may still exist in the current north wing.
