Description
The wall located approximately 30 metres north of Stansgate Abbey is a historical structure with origins dating back to the 12th century. It has been rebuilt at an unknown date and features a 19th or 20th century red brick south buttress. The wall incorporates 12th century moulded and shafted stone fragments, septaria, and red tile, standing at approximately 11 feet high. This wall may be the one referenced in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments as adjacent to the south wall of the former 16th century Stansgate Abbey Farmhouse and part of the east wall of the east range of the cloister of the former 12th century Cluniac Priory, which was founded by Ralph, son of Brian, as a cell to Lewes Priory. The Priory was dissolved around 1525, after which the church was repurposed as a barn, which has since been demolished, leaving only this section of the wall above ground.
