Description

The Old Bakery is a house located in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, dating from the 17th century and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame, mostly plastered, with some weatherboarding, and is roofed with handmade red clay tiles. The building has three bays facing northwest, with a central stack. An 18th-century wing is located at the rear, and an additional bay was added to the right of the main range in the 18th or early 19th century, which was formerly used as a bakery. There is a 20th-century extension at the rear right angle, roofed with red clay pantiles. To the left of the main range, there is a single-storey cottage from the 19th century that has been combined with the main building.

The main range is two storeys high, while the rear wing is one storey with attics. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century casement windows and one 20th-century bay window. The first floor has three 20th-century casement windows. The entrance features a four-panel door with a simple canopy supported by profiled brackets. Inside the main range, there are jowled posts, chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of vertical section. A large wood-burning hearth is located on the left, with 20th-century alterations. The right extension contains an arched aperture from a former baker's oven, which has been demolished. Additionally, there is an 18th-century hearth at the back of the rear wing, with a semi-circular interior and 20th-century alterations.
