Description

A pair of cottages and shop dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of timber framing and red brick, in a variety of bond patterns, with some plastered areas, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It comprises two parallel ranges, each three bays wide, running north-west to south-east, with an external stack at the south-east end of each range. A 20th-century external stack and shopfront are located at the north-west end. A 19th-century extension adjoins the north-west end to the north-east, and a lean-to extension is situated in the east angle, roofed with red clay pantiles. A 20th-century lean-to conservatory and a further lean-to extension, also with red clay pantile roofing, are to the south-east. The building is one storey high with attics. The south-west elevation features two early 19th-century sash windows of 16 lights, and one 19th-century horizontal sash window of 12 lights within a lean-to dormer. A central boarded door has a moulded open pediment on scrolled brackets. The brickwork is plastered with a dentilled course below the eaves. The roofs are gambrel. The north-west elevation has a bowed shopfront with 35 small panes on each side of a central half-glazed door with an overlight. On the first floor of the north-west elevation, there is one 19th or 20th-century sash window of 10 + 15 lights, and one 19th-century horizontal sash window of 12 lights. The building is included on the list for its group value.
