Description

TL 71 SE HATFIELD PEVEREL SPORTSMAN'S LANE NOUNSLEY (north-east side)

5/72 Priory Farmhouse

GV II

House. Early C17, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3-bay main range facing SW with axial stack and external stack at left end, and 2-bay crosswing to right. Single-storey lean-to extension at left end. Main range of one storey with attics, crosswing of 2 storeys. 3-window range of C20 casements, including 2 in gabled dormers. Door in left side of C20 porch. Chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section. Jowled posts, some exposed studding. Diamond mortices in the rear wall probably imply re-use of timber rather than unglazed windows in this building. Large wood-burning hearth facing to left, with re-used mantel beam from a timber-framed chimney, and 0.33 metre walls of C17 bricks. Smaller wood-burning hearth facing to right with internal brick splays, and chamfered mantel beam with lamb's tongue stops. Bread oven in rebricked hearth at left end, door missing. Originally there was a lobby-entrance in front of the stack, doorway now blocked. RCHM 19.
