Description

The garden wall surrounding The Vicarage is constructed of red brick in various bonds and dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It extends approximately 55 metres east from St. Andrew's Church, then turns south for about 35 metres, and finally west for around 80 metres. There is a 20th-century gateway near the western end of the north wall, as well as a blocked gateway near the western end of the south wall. The south wall features one square pier. The north and east walls are 17th-century structures that rise to about 1.5 metres, which were raised to approximately 3 metres in the 18th century. The south wall is primarily 18th century and stands at about 3.5 metres high. There are three bee boles in the north wall, one in the east wall, and three in the south wall, all facing inwards and featuring arched heads, though they are now blocked and vary in size and height above the ground. A house known as Hatfield Priory was built against the western wall of the church shortly after the Dissolution and was demolished around 1770. The older sections of the wall enclosed the east garden of Hatfield Priory and are depicted in an estate map by Richard Woods from 1765, held in the Essex Record Office. The wall is included for its group value.
