Description

Priory Lodge comprises two houses, originally a single house dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The original structure consists of a three-bay main range facing west, and a two-bay crosswing to the left, featuring an internal stack at the junction. An 18th or 19th century stack is located in the right return wall. A 19th century extension adjoins the left side and extends to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. A late 19th or early 20th century Gothic Revival gabled porch is situated on the left side, with 20th century single-storey lean-to extensions to the rear of the porch, and to the rear of the main range.

The exterior presents a misleading appearance. Notably, the crosswing, forming the right side of one of the houses, retains original features including jowled posts, close studding with curved tension bracing trenched to the outside, a chamfered binding beam with plain horizontal section joists jointed with central tenons, a steeply cranked and chamfered tiebeam with plain stops, and a shutter groove for an unglazed window at the rear. The original roof, formerly of crownpost construction and hipped at the rear, was rebuilt in the early 19th century. Minor roof charring and other alterations resulted from a fire in 1916.

Inside, the timber framing is exposed to the right of the main stack. The building served as the Vicarage until a new vicarage was constructed to the east of the church. It was formerly recorded in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments.
